Redeployment

This guest post from Werner Rogers

After 10 years in the military and 5 different deployments, it never seems to get easier to say goodbye. Luckily, we got the call 3 weeks ago that a house had opened on base if we wanted to move in. I can not express to you how much of a god-send that call was since I worry about my family’s safety constantly while I’m gone and our apartment lease runs out at the end of this month. At least now, I know that if someone wants to get in my house or to my wife and kids, not only will they have to go through checkpoints to do so, but they’ll have to be either brave or stupid to try anything on base. Anyway, since I got everyone settled in at the new place, I had to get all of the creature comforts turned on too. After a quick Bing search for Get Wild Blue, I got the internet set up. After a couple of more searches and phone calls, the cable and home phone were ready to go too. Now if this deployment would go as quick and smooth as the move.

Living on Unemployment Benefits

Thanks for the guest post by Jonathan Curtis

I was laid off a few months ago and have been living off of unemployment benefits. Since money is tight right now, I cancelled my cable and opted to go with streaming video from Netflix. This means I watch all of my TV shows and movies through an internet connection. I went to clear-internet.com to make sure I have the fastest internet available so that I know I can enjoy myself when I get home from a long day of work. I feel like these days one doesn’t need to have cable at home in order to have access to all of the entertainment they need. There is so much entertainment available via the web that I felt like I was wasting my money on cable. On top of streaming video on Netflix, almost all of the major television networks have full episodes of their shows available online. I also figured out a way to connect my computer to my TV, so I’m not missing out on much picture quality. I’m pretty proud of myself for this cash-saving accomplishment, and I’m trying to think of other ways I can cut back.

Stay at Home

Guest post written by my buddy Brian Workman

Being a stay at home mom means I’ve got a lot of free time but that’s fine by me – basketball is about to get started! I love College basketball so much and though that season’s already begun the pro games are about to start back and I couldn’t be more excited. I actually played ball in college and though things have been really great staying home, the season’s what I live for. I got us Direct TV Scottsdale so I could watch all the games but my husband thinks it’s so I can watch Real Housewives or something like that. I know that sounds silly but what in the world does that have to do with me watching my games? He’s so clueless when it comes to how much l love sports but whatever keeps him off my back at the end of the day is fine by me! I love that he’s always trying to make my life easier though and if he thinks I need to watch reality tv I’ll let him keep thinking it.

Answered Prayers

I appreciate the guest post, Marian Combs

Since my husband had his accident in 2009, we have been a pretty tight budget. After getting over the shock that he may never walk again and then finding a doctor who would prove that wrong, we said some very gracious prayers and started thinking about just how we were going to pay that doctor. Insurance, of course, but the damage was far beyond what they would pay for. I can’t even imagine what it would have been like without it. So, here we are ten surgeries later and he is walking again. Praise God. Now, if God would just pay our bills we’d be set. Al suggested we try to lower what we’re paying monthly so we can pay more on the hospital bills and get them paid off sooner. With him not able to work, I am the sole provider for our empty nest. Unfortunately, the house needs to be just as cool and have just as many lights on with or without children. We researched several texas electricity providers to see if we couldn’t lower our monthly bill. Success! We saved enough money monthly to pay a little more on the hospital bills. Hopefully this trend will continue. God, can you hear me?

The Lab Coat Kept Me From Talking

The other day, I had a most unfortunate visit to my dentist for a tooth that had been bothering me for quite some time. For at least 3 weeks is what I’d say the length of time was, and it was really starting to bother and annoy me, especially because it hindered me from yelling talking at my kids, and from having coherent business calls and conversations as I needed to. So the day when I had to postpone a business call in lieu of dealing with this tooth pain,  I knew I had to do something about it because it was starting to hinder my work.

When I called the dentist’s office, they actually got me an appointment right away, more like in the next couple of hours for this sore tooth. I was happy, very happy for the appointment, but not too happy to actually get the work done that may have been needed. Why is that, you wonder? Why is it that I waited so long and dreaded it so bad to see the one person (doctor) who could make all of this pain and discomfort go away AND who could get me back in shape so that I could get back to work?

I’m afraid of dentists. Yes, I’m a big baby and I’m afraid of needles, pain and hurting.

Some may call it the white coat or the lab coat syndrome, but whatever it is, I just get all nervous and scared whenever I have to go to the dentist for anything, even including cleanings!!

Well, the dentist was very nice, very informative and understanding of my fears. He explained everything to me and what he would need to do to get things fixed up for me. Diagnosis: a cracked tooth that needed 1. another filling, or 2. extraction. Needless to say, number one is the route that I insisted on going, although he cautioned me that I would probably need more work done on that tooth later (a root canal, crown, etc.)

To be perfectly honest, I was just glad, glad, glad, that I was able to leave out of the dentist’s office with the SAME amount of teeth that I had when I got there. Although I’ll have to go back in a few weeks, at least now I have some kind of idea of what’s going on and what I can expect when I go for my appointment. I won’t be nervous, scared or antsy. Even if he wears a suit or his dentist’s jacket, I‘ll be perfectly fine and relaxed and let him do his job. After all, I have some conference calls to return and lots of yelling talking to do!

The New Professional Speaker: Me!

Quite often, many of my friends are mildly surprised when I tell them that I am also a professional speaker, in addition to my writing and blogging business. They seem surprised because, they say, it takes a lot of courage and confidence to speak in front of people, and they feel that it’s something that they cannot comfortably do. But for me, I thoroughly enjoy public speaking since I love to talk anyway, and to do it in a setting where people actually WANT to hear what I have to say is such a motivator for me!

Of course, when I first started speaking, I was a bit nervous when I got up in front of others. But shortly after I joined the professional speaking organization at Toastmaster’s, I learned quite a few tips and tricks that helped me to quickly acclimate to speaking confidently in front of others. Although in the Toastmaster’s setting, students are allowed to use their notes, props and to sometimes glance at their computer monitors, after a period of time where they get to use and hone their speaking skills, they find themselves relying on those things less and less.

As for speaking topics, I enjoy finding and speaking on those things that interest me A LOT. It’s much easier for me to craft a speech and easier for me to add humor and anecdotes to my speech. In essence, the more comfortable I am about talking about the things I know, the more comfortable I am in delivering the speech.

My future speaking goals include participating in another local Toastmaster’s club and securing other speaking clients on my own. I’d like to also use my blog and other resources to start a tutorial on helping new speaker’s get started in the business and setting their own goals for a speaking future. Stay tuned and see where we go. It should be a fun ride!

Special homemade popsicle recipe

Guest post written by Cady Wainwright

I love to make all kinds of little treats for myself and my roommates. But we all like to do that so it’s not like I’m doing all the work or paying for all the ingredients for this stuff. But honestly though, when it’s this hot out during the summer, the last thing that I want to do is eat a hot cake or pie. (One of my roommates is really great at making pies!)

I really wanted to make some popsicles a few nights ago, so we went online to see if we could find some decent recipes for them. When I was doing that, I ran across the website www.WIRELESSINTERNET.net and after I looked through ti some I showed it to my roommates. After a roommate meeting we agreed to change over our internet service to it, so I took care of that.

The popsicle recipe that I found just sounded so delicious that we made it right away. They disappeared so fast because they were so good! I think I’m going to make some more soon.

The Grocery Store That Could…But Didn’t

When it comes to servicing customers, it’s the little things that we like, right?

I mean, of course some customers are just simply hard to please, but for the most part, all the customer wants is a little acknowledgment and some attention. When people choose to spend their money with your business, you owe them at least the courtesy and acknowledgment that you see and appreciate them and their consideration.

If more businesses took the time to appreciate the customer, businesses offline and online would be much more profitable and successful. However, far too many businesses have taken the attitude that the customer is a “nuisance” and that their day is being interrupted by even their mere presence.

This happened to me not long ago when I was at a local grocery store here in my town. Here’s what happened:

I didn’t have much time that afternoon to do an extensive grocery shopping trip. The kids were going to get out of school within the next 30 minutes or so, so all I had time to do was to run into the grocery store to pick up a few key items that I needed. Well, if any of you have ever thought *that* before, then you know that the two-or-three item pickup turned into a small cart of groceries!

Anyway, I did my quick pickups and went to the front to go ahead and checkout. There was a cashier at the service desk and one other on the floor. There was what appeared to be a manager of sorts having a conversation with another manager off to the side of service desk. Both the service desk cashier and the other floor cashier both had customers that they were checking out, so they were already busy. When the service desk cashier saw me, she said to the manager off to the side that I had approached the lanes and that I needed to be checked out.

The manager nodded that she heard the cashier, but she kept talking. The cashier asked me to wait a second, and the cashier/manager would check me out in a moment.

What was a moment turned into a minute. It then turned into several more minutes. Remember the school bus and children. I had to go.

Out of frustration and time ticking away, I moved out of the would-be checkout lane and went down to the other cashier in the store. She had someone already in her line of course, so I had to wait. I did. When my turn came to checkout, I placed my items on the belt and she began to scan them. I told her that I had been waiting for quite a while down on the other end and was basically ignored by what I thought was the store’s manager.

Now here, you would think that I would get some sort of apology, explanation or SOMETHING that indicated that the store was sorry for making a customer wait needlessly. Noooo! Do you know what I got? A succession of sighs from the cashier and a glaring look to boot. NO acknowledgment, NO apology, NO explanation and at the end of my checkout, NO thank you!

Now what I don’t understand is this: Was I (the customer) wrong for voicing my concerns? Was I supposed to understand some unspoken reason as to why this manager had not serviced the customers? Not to mention also that the conversation that these two managers were having was obviously much more important than my business. When the cashier was scanning my groceries, she came over to bag the items, put about two cans in a bag, and then walked back off AGAIN to finish this all-important conversation with her co-worker.

The attitude of the cashier who checked me out, the aloofness of that particular manager and the overall attitude of the store in servicing their customers just plain sucked. There’s another large chain grocer in this town who offers stellar business and awesome customer service, so it’s no wonder why the store I went to suffers in both those areas. They don’t care.

I left the store that day pretty angered and frustrated, vowing to never give them my business again. Yes, I wrote an email and sent a letter, but is that going to change things? Do I expect it to? It probably won’t change the store and their customer service approach, but at least they’ll know why the big, fancy grocery chain up the street is getting all of the business, and they’re not.
